Wirral’s party leaders cooperate to tackle COVID-19

Post by Wirral Council News » Sat Mar 21, 2020 5:27 pm

Party leaders from Wirral’s five elected political groups are working jointly to help tackle the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Cllr Pat Hackett (Labour and leader of the council) Cllr Ian Lewis (Conservative), Cllr Phil Gilchrist (Liberal Democrats), Cllr Pat Cleary (Green Party) and Cllr Moira McLaughlin (Independent Group) have released a joint statement, urging residents to follow NHS and public health advice:

"We face what is now a public health and economic crisis the likes of which most people have never seen.

"As the leaders of the five political groups in the Council chamber we are clear that this is not the time for party politics.

"We are, instead, all working together in this Covid-19 crisis to support residents, and the steps your Council is taking to keep essential services running.

"We urge everyone to follow and act upon the advice from our NHS and public health colleagues.

"We know that many residents are playing their part to help and support the frail, elderly and vulnerable in our borough.

"Street by street, Wirral people are caring for friends and neighbours, donating food, helping with shopping, buying responsibly and not hoarding.

"All this work has our full unqualified support and we will do all we can to make sure Wirral plays its part in this global battle.

"Many Council staff, now working from home, as well as councillors and Party campaigners are helping as volunteers.

"If you are a resident who needs help, advice or guidance, or if you are able to help others, now is the time to call.

"Please don’t leave it to others – as they may be leaving it to you."

For advice and support from the Council and its partner organisations during the COVID-19 situation, call the council’s helpline on 0151 666 5050 or visit wirral.gov.uk/coronavirus. Phonelines are open 9am-5pm, Monday – Friday.
