Council services information for Christmas 2019

Post by Wirral Council News » Tue Dec 17, 2019 5:32 pm

Wirral Council has confirmed details of Christmas opening hours for key services.

As in previous years, council staff have to take unpaid leave every year as part of budget saving measures. Taking these days at Christmas allows a number of council buildings to be closed, making savings of more than £1 million.

Some council services won’t be available between Christmas and New Year.  Many services can still be requested through the council website, but will not receive attention until services resume on 2 January 2020.

Libraries/One Stop Shops

Wirral libraries will close at their usual times on Monday 23 December until 2 January. All One Stop Shops will close at 5pm on Monday 23 December, except Birkenhead and Seacombe, which will close at 5pm on Tuesday 24 December. Usual opening times from Thursday 2 January 2020.

Leisure centres

Open up to and including Tuesday 24 December, until 5pm (except for golf shops, which close at 1pm)
Closed on Wednesday 25, Thursday 26 and Friday 27 December
Open on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 December, normal centre hours
Closed on Monday 30, Tuesday 31 December and Wednesday 1 January 2020
Business as usual from Thursday 2 January
Wirral Sailing Centre (West Kirby) closes at 4pm Friday 20 December and reopens 9am Friday 3 January 2020
Our dedicated Leisure Call Centre team will be available on 0151 606 2010 during Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 December for bookings and customer enquiries. Customers can continue to book for available classes and courts online or via our downloadable App (usual subscription restrictions apply).

Council Tax, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support

The council’s general telephone services, including Council Tax and benefits support, will be closed from 5pm on Tuesday 24 December, reopening on Thursday 2 January.

Homelessness and housing

The Housing Options Team will be operating an emergency service only from Wednesday 25 December until 9am on Thursday 2 January. The offices will be closed during this time and completed referrals will not be actioned until the January 2 2020.

In an emergency situation, where the service user has nowhere safe to stay that night, between 9am and 5pm on 27, 30 or 31 December, please contact the Central Advice and Duty Team on 0151 514 2222.  If you are calling after 5pm, or on any of the days not listed above, and if your enquiry is urgent, please contact the Emergency Duty Team on 0151 677 6557.

Normal service provision will resume on January 2 2020.

Waste collections

If your grey or green bin would be collected on Wednesday 25 December, put it out on Saturday 21 December. If your bin would be collected on Thursday 26 December, put it out on Sunday 22 December.

If your bin is due for collection on Wednesday 1 January 2020, please put it out for collection on Saturday 28 December. On all days, please make sure your bin is out by 7am on the morning of scheduled collection.

There will be no bulky collections available between Christmas Day and 2 January, while there is a break in the garden waste collection service between December 16 and January 13 2020, as per the terms and conditions of the service.
