This is why Wirral's town halls will glow orange soon...

Post by Wirral Council News » Fri Nov 22, 2019 2:57 pm

Wirral’s town halls will unite with landmarks across the globe, glowing orange from November 25, the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls.

(Content note: This article contains mention of coercive control and domestic abuse).

The awareness day signals the start of a global 16 day campaign of activism to raise awareness of gendered violence and abuse against women and girls. Orange, the official colour of the campaign, symbolises a brighter future free from abuse.

In Wirral, in addition to the illuminations, this will include the reprisal of the borough's ‘Busting the Myths’ campaign which frames examples of survivors' experience to destigmatise harmful misconceptions around the issue of coercive control. You can see examples of some of the campaign artwork in the gallery below.

Coercive control is an act or a pattern of acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim.

Now recognised by law as a form of abuse since 2015, raising awareness of coercive control is a vital part of supporting survivors and their experiences.

While much work is being done to combat domestic abuse in Wirral, for many people, abuse and violence remains a daily part of life.

Wirral will proudly support the #16days campaign and, throughout, will be promoting the help available to all people in the borough via the tireless work of many charities and support organisations.

Birkenhead and Wallasey’s town halls will shine orange in solidarity with victims and survivors from November 25 until December 1.
