Birkenhead Library: where Art-Rock meets Post-Punk

Post by Wirral Council News » Tue Oct 29, 2019 4:52 pm

Birkenhead Central Library has teamed up with Get It Loud In Libraries once again to announce a new February gig at the iconic Grade II listed venue, featuring Irish Poet Sinead O’Brien and Brighton’s punk quartet Egyptian Blue.

As part of Independent Venue Week – a seven-day celebration of music venues around the country – the latest gig will showcase the library as a cultural hub for arts, music, and creativity – with the bonus of great acoustics!

Performing on 2 February from 2.30pm will be London-via-Limerick’s Sinead O’Brien, who entered the music industry through the medium of spoken word. Together with bandmates Julian Hanson and Oscar Roberston, O’Brien speaks her poetic bars over Art-Rock melodies to create a “mesmerizing call-to-arms” in her recent track, Taking on Time. Described by Rough Trade as a “transfixing” live performer, O’Brien conducts the pace and intensity to create a unique live show.

Brighton four-piece Egyptian Blue is made up of Andy Buss and Leith Ambrose on guitar and vocals, with Luke Phelps on bass and Isaac Idle on drums. The group released its debut EP Collateral Damage earlier this year, which was praised by Gigwise for its wholly post-punk feel. The band has been described as an “unformidable live act” by music website Underscore Part 3.

Cllr Julie McManus, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said:

“I’m really pleased we have the chance to experience another great gig at our much-loved library, and I hope visitors old and new will come along on the day to enjoy something new.”

Previous Get It Loud In Libraries gigs at Birkenhead Library include The Orielles, Hannah Cohen, Pip Blom and Our Girl. View the full archive at the Get It Loud In Libraries website.

Tickets for the February gig are available now at seetickets.com, priced at £9.90 each.
