Mayor of Wirral's message to EU residents: "You are always welcome here."

Post by Wirral Council News » Fri Feb 14, 2020 2:03 pm

The Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Tony Smith, has written to Wirral's EU residents with a simple message: "You are welcome here now and will remain welcome here in the future."

The letter, sent to more than 2,700 EU nationals on Wirral's electoral register is also a reminder that following the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union, EU nationals should apply for the EU Settlement Scheme by June 2021.

Wirral Mayor's letter to EU residents in full

Dear Resident,

We believe Wirral is a wonderful place to live, work and do business and we value all our local residents. Over time, thousands of EU nationals have made Wirral their home and we appreciate how they have enriched our valued communities.

We want to make a clear commitment to people living in Wirral who are from other EU countries – you are welcome here now and will remain welcome here in the future. We are extremely proud that you are part of the collective Wirral family.

There are more than 2,700 EU nationals on our electoral register and we want you and your families to stay in the borough and continue to call it ‘home’. You make an enormous contribution to the cultural and economic life of Wirral and we want that to carry on and grow even further.

The EU Settlement Scheme has been fully open to the public since March 30, 2019 and I hope if you haven’t already applied, you are in the process of doing so. EU, other EEA and Swiss citizens should apply by June 30, 2021.

You only need to complete three key steps – prove your identity, show you live in the UK and declare any criminal convictions. It is designed to be as simple and straightforward as possible. For more information about the EU Settlement Scheme and what it means for you, please visit

We are only able to contact people who are on the open version of the electoral register. If you have family or friends who may not be aware of the EU Settlement Scheme please share this letter. Also, if you or anyone you know needs support with the application process, please contact Wirral Change, a local organisation who can help you directly. Call 0151 649 8177 or email

Once again please let us reassure you and remind you, Wirral welcomes all EU citizens, we are glad you chose to live here and we want you to stay in our wonderful borough.

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Tony Smith

Mayor of Wirral
