New Ferry Future High Streets funding confirmed

Post by Wirral Council News » Mon May 24, 2021 12:08 pm

Wirral Council has received official notification that it is to receive £3.2m from the government’s Future High Streets Fund to carry out redevelopment, highway and public realm works that will underpin the wider New Ferry regeneration masterplan.

The announcement about the funding was first made on Boxing Day 2020, but as the New Ferry bid was only partially successful – the original bid was for £4.6m – council officers had to resubmit a scaled down version for approval.

The revised scheme includes supporting the redevelopment of sites and physical infrastructure works, alongside plans to partially reopen the, currently pedestrianised, Bebington Road to traffic.

These include plans to incorporate short-stay parking bays into the highway improvements on Bebington Road to encourage further footfall to the businesses there and provide an improved appearance, with new benches, street lighting and landscaping. This would make the centre more attractive and accessible for businesses, visitors and residents.

Progress continues to be made on the council’s acquisition programme to bring properties within the redevelopment sites that are still owned privately into council ownership. As a last resort, the council will use powers of Compulsory Purchase as these properties are a barrier to the wider regeneration of the area.

The search for a development partner is also moving forward and prospective developers will shortly be able to formally register their interest ahead of a competitive dialogue process opening.
