Help breathe new life into Liscard

Post by Wirral Council News » Thu Oct 08, 2020 4:44 pm

Members of the local community and business owners are being asked for their views on ambitious proposals to reinvigorate one of Wirral’s key shopping areas.

The opinions and ideas of shoppers, residents and businesses will help shape an ambitious vision for Liscard, the aim being to support bringing about significant changes in the retail, street and pedestrian and residential areas, contributing to a masterplan which will drive the sustainable economic growth and renewal of the town over the next fifteen years.

The online consultation starts on Monday October 12 at midday and includes options to:

remodel the Cherry Tree Shopping Centre working with the centre owners,
improve retail and pedestrianised space, potentially for outdoor food and drink, community and cultural events
build new residential apartments,
develop a new “anchor” food retail store,
provide a multi-level car parking
When the consultation opens on Monday (October 12) you can view and download more detailed information and most importantly leave your feedback by filling out the questionnaire at the website www.bdp.com/liscardmasterplan.

Cllr Anita Leech, chair of Wirral Council’s Economy, Regeneration and Development Committee, said: “We now would like to hear what local people think of these ideas, so that we can develop a final masterplan for the town centre that improves the experience of residents, businesses and visitors, ensuring it is a town centre fit for the future.

“Community and business input is a vital part of this process so we know we are on the right path to deliver the environment, facilities and public spaces where our local people want to live, work and invest.”

Other possibilities for Liscard include improving the road network and one-way gyratory around the town, with scope to provide more space for walking, cycling and better public transport connectivity to create a safer, calmer and more attractive centre, as well as earmarking potential sites for new housing development, to create a renewed ‘urban village’.

In addition, the consultation will ask people’s opinions and ideas on options to improve the public spaces to enhance the look and feel of the town, such as a redesign of Liscard Way with new paving, better lighting, modernised street furniture, more greenery and the potential for a new civic square.

The masterplan aims to support local aspirations for a community hub to provide a focal point for local people to meet and nurture community life.

The masterplan and consultation is being financed by the Liverpool City Region Town Centre Fund and is part of a wider £500,000 programme of investment for Liscard that is delivering additional projects which will improve the sustainability and vitality of the town centre.

Due to social distancing restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, unfortunately there will be no face to face events. However, the YouTube video on the website will give you an overview of the masterplan proposals when the consultation formally opens.

This consultation commences on 12 October 2020 and is open for three weeks, closing at 1pm on 2 November. The comments received will be reviewed and used to develop a final masterplan.
