Social Prescribers offer support with life's worries

Post by Wirral Council News » Wed Oct 07, 2020 5:26 pm

Ahead of World Mental Health Day this Saturday, now might be a good time to think about whether a social prescriber could support you with any worries that make us all feel unwell from time to time.

Social prescribing is a way of linking you to appropriate, non-clinical support in the community. It can help to empower you, and give you the confidence and support to make changes to your life if you need to.

Improving our lifestyles or taking control of a practical problem can be challenging, and people often feel they don't know where to start.

You can access a social prescriber (sometimes called a link worker) via your GP. Your appointment might be at the surgery, at your home, or even over the phone. Whichever way you meet, you'll be able to talk in confidence about what matters to you and what changes you'd like to make.

What can I talk to a social prescriber about?

You could benefit from social prescribing if:

you have a practical problem (housing, money, welfare, access to food or presciptions)
you would like to meet new people (this may be virtually at the moment, due to Coronavirus restrictions)
you are feeling low, isolated, anxious, stressed or depressed
you would like to make some changes to your lifestyle habits
Together, you will create a plan which will identify what support is available to you, how you can access it, and what steps you need to take next. You’ll get follow up appointments and support for as long as you both agree.
