Action being taken to make it safer to visit the local shops at Birkenhead

Post by Wirral Council News » Wed Oct 07, 2020 1:10 pm

Walking through Birkenhead’s high-street is set to become safer as Grange Road will be installed with a barrier to restrict motorists using the area.

Works to install the barrier at Grange Road / Charing Cross junction will start this month, October, and reinforce the existing Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) in place.

The existing TRO restricts vehicle access and parking during peak shopping times along Grange Road from McDonald’s to TKMaxx (junction with Exmouth Street / Whetstone Lane).

The barrier will be installed at the top of the route, next to McDonald’s, and will be locked between 10:30am and 4:30pm, in line with the existing TRO.

Businesses can still use the route when the barrier is open, for loading purposes, before 10:30am and after 4:30pm.

Cllr Liz Grey, Chair of Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport at Wirral Council, says: “As the borough continue to face the ongoing pandemic and our local high streets are getting back on their feet again, it is now even more important that this route is maintained so it can be used safely by residents supporting local businesses and shopping for essentials.

“Reinforcing the existing measures that are in place at Grange Road High Street will not only make it safer for those walking along this route but will also enable those using it to better maintain social distancing.”
