More than 19,000 free packed lunches sent out to children this summer

Post by Wirral Council News » Thu Sep 03, 2020 5:40 pm

One thousand young people in Wirral have received free packed lunches over the summer holidays, thanks to community partnership working and funding from Edsential.

While council playschemes were suspended due to Coronavirus, staff were busy preparing lunches and activity packs for children in conjunction with partners from Beechwood, Birkenhead North and Leasowe.

Together, they sent out more than 19,000 packed lunches to young people in these areas and beyond.

Staff also delivered:

more than 1,500 packs filled with games and activities
over 1,000 arts and sports packs
a host of other goodies, including ice-creams, hotdogs, t-shirts, and prizes
Wirral Council's Youth and Play Service team leader Paddy Mulligan said:

“I am overwhelmed by the amount of effort the team has put in, the combined efforts of all the local community groups, and the amazing funding from Edsential - without which none of this would have been possible.”

“Sadly, the young people couldn’t come to our playschemes this summer, so it was great to be able to bring something to them instead.”

A parent who also works at Hillside Primary said:

"This is a fantastic project coming into the heart of the community. Packed lunches were enjoyed by every single child and activity packs were absolutely out of this world. The team is magnificent - it couldn't have happened without them."
