There’s a lot of love for Wirral businesses

Post by Wirral Council News » Wed Aug 26, 2020 12:01 pm

Newsagents, greengrocers and butchers, bike shops, hairdressers and flower shops – and even a gin distillery have been nominated to be Wirral’s “High Street Heroes” in recent months.

As part of Wirral Council’s Shop Local campaign people were asked to nominate those local shops and businesses that have gone that extra mile to help and were overwhelmed by the response.

Almost 250 nominations flooded in within days with 88 separate businesses highlighted so far by grateful customers who told how much they had been helped when they needed it most during the recent COVID-19 lockdown.

Leader of Wirral Labour Group and Cabinet Member for Finance & Resources, Cllr Janette Williamson, said: “Not only did people nominate local shops and businesses but they told us why, with stories about the dedication and sacrifices businesses have shown. From the additional long hours worked, home deliveries and fantastic customer care – there were many examples of business owners going the extra mile, even just phoning their customers to check up they are well.

“And it was not just small independent businesses have been nominated, but we have had praise too for people working in supermarkets and national chains for all of their hard work and dedication too.”

Comments accompanying the nominations included:

“I was self isolating from 14th March but they have been wonderful, delivering my weekly order and providing a cheerful connection with the outside world” and “It’s hard to put into words just how much they have done for us during these unprecedented times without becoming a complete emotional mess!”

Another said: “It is wonderful to know that they are there to support us at this unusual time, even after almost 6 months - they must be worn out!” and one said: “They supported the most vulnerable residents in our area by taking telephone orders and making deliveries. The good humour, the attention to customer and staff safety has been exemplary”

There is still time to nominate a business which deserves the additional recognition, the unsung heroes who have helped their community, whether it’s a shop, takeaway, hairdresser, cleaner or other local business supporting their area.

Cllr Williamson added: “This campaign underlines community spirit and the lengths businesses have gone to serve their customers… and now thanks to the campaign, we’re hearing how much those same customers value them in return.”

Chosen businesses will be ‘the face of our high-streets’ in a new ad campaign. To nominate a business email: pressoffice@wirral.gov.uk Nominations close Friday September 4.
