Post by Wirral Council News » Thu Jul 30, 2020 5:05 pm

The Highways England scheme to remove the 50-year-old bridge over the M53 will require a full closure of the motorway between junction one and three this weekend.

The southbound entry slip road onto the M53 at junction 2 closed on Wednesday 22 July and will remain closed for 11 months but to remove the bridge the M53 will need be fully closed between junctions one to three from 8pm on Friday 31 July until 5am on Monday 3 August.

A diversion will take drivers along A roads through Moreton and Upton.

Drivers traveling in this direction should plan for additional journey time and take extra care.

The bridge, once removed, will be slid along the M53 to an area away from the road where it can be safely demolished.

The new bridge will be constructed using steel and concrete and is due to open in summer 2021.

More details on the scheme are available on the Highways England website.
