Support for our sporting superstars!

Post by Wirral Council News » Wed May 01, 2019 4:05 pm

Three teenage sportspeople from Wirral have been given a financial boost by the Wirral Sports Forum to help them further their achievements.

The group are this year’s recipients of the Forum’s sports bursary, and they received their good news at a presentation ceremony hosted by Wirral Mayor, Cllr Geoffrey Watt, at Wallasey Town Hall last week.

The three sportspeople to benefit from bursaries this year are:

Maisie Dahner: Maisie has been selected to represent Great Britain athletics in the 100m and 200m sprints at the World Transplant Games in August 2019 after winning double Gold in the British Transplant Games in 2018. Maisie is only 13 and has already had two liver transplants, but she just keeps achieving. The bursary will help to pay for her GB kit for the Games.
Nathan Young: Nathan is 19 and profoundly deaf. He is a very talented swimmer and holds multiple British records in distances up to 200m. He competed at the World Championships in Texas in 2015, and the European Championships in Poland last year. Nathan is the only GB athlete who has been selected to compete in the World Deaf Swimming championships in Brazil in August 2019. The bursary will help to pay for the travel and accommodation for the championships.
Mia Amer: 16 year-old Mia has a fabulous track record in gymnastics in the North West and Nationally. With many silver and gold medals to her name, she is one of the top tumblers in the country. She is committed to her sport, and now wants to take her level 1 coaching course, so that she can share her medal-winning experience with the young athletes in her club. The bursary will cover around half the costs of her coaching course.
The Wirral Sports Forum provides a voice for local sports clubs, associations and leagues on Wirral.

Supported by Wirral Council, the Forum acts as a unique networking hub to assess the sporting needs of the area and provide help and advice on a range of subjects including Clubmark accreditation and sports promotion.

The Forum exists to help promote and, where possible, support Wirral’s developing sporting talent. Part of this contribution is to raise funds for a unique bursary scheme that provides financial help to young sports people to achieve their sporting goals.

The annual Wirral Sports Awards, which the mayor attended last October, significantly contributed to the bursary scheme.
