Wirral hosts annual Care Leavers Football Tournament at Tranmere Rovers FC

Post by Wirral Council News » Wed Jun 13, 2018 9:41 am

Reigning Wirral champions last month hosted the North West Leaving Care Football Tournament at Tranmere Rovers Football Club.

An annual event, having run for eight years, the team list comprises young people from every leaving care service in the North West. Ten full size teams of youths leaving care services across the region battled it out in TRFC’s indoor area to become victors.

A prestigious title in the leaving care world, the Wirral team bravely defended their claim to victory on the hot spring day. Unfortunately this time, the team from Tameside took home the trophy.

A great day, run smoothly by staff, friends and family members, was had by all with the two professional FA referees overseeing the competition commenting on the “really high standard of football” at play.

Director of Children’s Service for Wirral Paul Boyce presented medals to every young player in a presentation following the event with some of the awards being sponsored by Safe Hands Ltd’s Denny Fletcher.

Chris Pentecost, Acting Team Manager for Wirral Leaving Care Service, said of the event, “It was a fantastic day for the young people. Passions ran high and low, you’d think it was the World Cup! I’d personally like to thanks Tranmere Rovers FC and their staff for going the extra mile.”

Next year’s tournament will be hosted by this year’s champions, in Tameside. With the World Cup on the horizon, all we’ve got to say is, watch out England!
