The council is encouraging residents who smoke to ‘stub it out for good’ this World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), Thursday 31 May.
Smoking remains one of the largest preventable causes of death and is responsible for 12% of all heart disease deaths. To highlight the damage that smoking and tobacco use does to heart health, the theme for WNTD this year is Tobacco and heart disease.
The day which is marked globally, is the ideal opportunity for those who smoke or use tobacco to make the pledge or first step to quit for good.
Taking the decision to ‘Stub it out’ will give immediate and long-term health benefits to those who quite, from as soon as just 20 minutes. More information on the range of health benefits that take place one a person quits, can be found on the World Health Organisations website.

World No Tobacco Day is an initiative from the World Health Organisation, to raise awareness of the increasing amount deaths and health related problems caused by tobacco use around the world.
