Around the Wirral in 72 Schools

Postby Wirral Council News » Tue Jul 31, 2018 10:57 am

Pupils from primary schools across Wirral have joined forces for a series of community eco events to tackle environmental issues in their local communities.

The ‘Around the Wirral in 72 Schools’ project was set up to show pupils they can really make a difference if they work together to protect the environment.

Originally only 60 schools were involved in the project but more and more wanted to sign up.

Each school litter picked their way to their nearest neighbouring school, starting from Clare Mount Specialist Sports College, Moreton and finishing with Brookhurst Primary School, Birkenhead on July 3.

£50 was also awarded to each school who took part to fund an eco-project of their choosing and they were encouraged to work in partnership with their eco school neighbours and share project ideas. For example, one group of schools hosted a fashion show using only upcycled clothing.

Litter picking is also a key piece of evidence needed for eco schools working towards their green flag awards.

The Eco Schools Green Flags are awarded by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy to empower and educate pupils to make positive changes in their local area and protect the environment.

Similarly, 50 students from six eco secondary schools created a film called ‘the last straw’ as part of Wirral’s campaign against single-use plastics and was shown recently to other schools as part of World Environment Day celebrations at Royden Park.

Through the use of drama, cartoons and CGI, the film seeks to raise awareness of the damage caused by single-use plastics.
