Community Wellbeing Project invites residents to walk a mile with Macmillan

Post by Wirral Council News » Thu Jul 12, 2018 2:46 pm

Wirral's first 'Macmillan Mile' event takes place on Thursday 19 July.

Part of the Community Wellbeing Project, funded by Wirral Council, this family-friendly event aims to encourage survivors of cancer to stay active by walking alongside their families and friends.

Lucy Holmes, Macmillan Community Wellbeing Project Manager, is the event’s organiser. Lucy said, “I came up with the idea of a Macmillan Mile as this is a manageable distance for most of our patients compared to the 5k Race for Life and Park Run events. The Macmillan Mile allows patients to keep active and feel a part of something bigger than their illness.”

The mile will take place in Birkenhead Park starting at the visitor’s centre. From 6pm attendees can walk, run or jog the route. Participants are encouraged to bring grandchildren, children, family members, friends and furry pals to walk with them.

Rather than being a race, the Macmillan Mile aims to promote the excellent work Macmillan do in Wirral and the importance now being stressed on physical activity as a means of preventing cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, “there is substantial evidence that higher levels of physical activity are linked to lower risks of developing several cancers.”

Addressing recent findings Lucy continued to say that increasingly, patients in Wirral are being encouraged to be physically active before, during and after their treatment, as “rest isn’t always best”.

This event is part of Macmillan and Wirral Council’s wider Community Wellbeing Project. The project, one of a series of pilot schemes, aims to complement the medical treatment for cancer and help patients get back on their feet. As part of the scheme, all Wirral Leisure Centres now have dedicated cancer information points and staff trained by Macmillan to support cancer patients.

The Community Wellbeing Project brings together the specialist work and experience of Macmillan and the resources and superb leisure staff from Wirral Council. As combined forces, Macmillan and the council are already improving the wellbeing of many patients in Wirral through the high-quality and targeted work of the project.

Information stalls from local agencies will be at the mile including Citizen’s Advice, Age UK, Macmillan Information Support Centre, invigor8 and more. There will also be a live band providing free entertainment for all.

This event is completely free and is advertised to anyone living with and beyond cancer. This is not a fundraising event although people can make donations to the fundraising team on the day.
