Join the thousands of people getting tested during national HIV Testing Week

Postby Wirral Council News » Thu Nov 16, 2017 3:59 pm

Join the thousands of people getting tested during national HIV Testing Week. Take the test!

Sexual Health Wirral is encouraging anyone, regardless of their age, gender, sexuality or ethnicity, who hasn’t had an HIV test to come along to one of their clinics and take a test during national HIV Testing Week.

The nationwide campaign, which runs from 18th - 24th November, aims to encourage testing and help reduce transmission rates of HIV. HIV can affect all ages, genders, ethnicities and sexualities and a large number of new HIV infections come from unprotected sex with someone who isn’t aware they have HIV. In Wirral, over 40% of people being treated for HIV are heterosexual.

HIV testing has never been easier. It’s confidential and free from all Sexual Health Wirral clinics. This week, as well as their usual clinics, there are extra drop in sessions offering HIV blood testing:

  • Monday 20 November, 8.00am - 12noon, St Catherine’s Health Centre, Derby Road, Birkenhead, CH42 0LQ

  • Tuesday 21 November, 8.00am - 12noon, Victoria Central Health Centre

  • Wednesday 22 November, 4.00pm - 7.00pm, St Catherine’s Health Centre, St Catherine’s Health Centre, Derby Road, Birkenhead, CH42 0LQ

  • Thursday 23 November, 10.00am - 2.00pm, St Catherine’s Health Centre, St Catherine’s Health Centre, Derby Road, Birkenhead, CH42 0LQ

Judy Fairbairn, Service Development Co-ordinator said; “You may have seen the recent Coronation Street storyline where Seb, a young, straight male, has just found out he has become infected with HIV after having sex with somebody who was carrying the virus. This just shows that although some people are deemed higher risk, it’s really important everyone gets tested to be sure”.

Jayne Williams, service lead for Sexual Health Wirral, told us “Testing for HIV has never been easier; if have any concerns you may be at risk of HIV, a simple quick blood test can put your mind at rest. Our experienced staff are trained professionals, offering confidential support to people of any age, sexuality or ethnicity.”

Sexual Health Wirral offers free and simple HIV postal test kits via sexualhealthwirral.nhs.uk as well as appointment and walk in and wait clinics, including evenings and weekends, from locations across Wirral.

For more information, or to download the clinic timetable visit sexualhealthwirral.nhs.uk or freephone 0300 123 5474, 8am - 8pm seven days a week.
